 Ans: During the last twenty years, there has  been a steady decline in the number of people  below poverty line. While in 1980, forty-nine percent of the people in India were below the poverty line, in 1985, the number was reduced to fortyfive percent. The year 1990 saw a further lowering of the percentage of people below poverty line which stood at forty while in 1995 and 2000, the figures stood at thirtyfive percent and twenty six percent  respectively. It is indeed a good sign that the level  of living is on the rise and increasing number of people have been able to overcome poverty.
