(Young people)
(Old people) |
It is interesting to note that there are significant differences between the spending habits of young people and those of old people in Odisha. While the young people spend only 19% of their income on housing, fuel, light and power, the older people spend 27% of their income on these items. Perhaps, the reason is that older people look for more comfortable houses in posh localities and they need more light and fuel because they have to entertain more visitors such as their sons, daughters, grandchildren, nephews and nieces and their spouses. Unlike young people, old people do not tend to eat out frequently. In clothing, footwear and durable goods, the young people, spend about 17% of their income while the old people spend only 13%. The reasons are obvious. The young people would tend to buy more fashionable dresses, footwear and durables for which they have to pay higher costs. For goods and services, the younger people spend 7% more than the older people obviously because, while at the old people have enough time to do things by themselves, the young people who are busy are engaged for the major part of the day have hire the services of other people to provide essential goods and services. The difference the spending rate on food between the young and the old is only marginal. While the old people spend 27% of their income on food, the young people spend 24% on food. The marginal difference may be due to the necessity of the of old people to take more nutritious food and also due to their eagerness to entertain guests.
